Expressive Colorado Fall Workshop with Alister Benn
Join us for an experience of a lifetime in the dramatic San Juan mountains of Colorado with our special guest Alister Benn of Expressive Photography. This workshop will be focused on your creative vision and helping you express yourself through your photographs.
Our workshops are an intimate experience; we share classroom space, carpooling, group meals, and we like to be up close and personal in the field to give the best learning experience.
We want to ensure that everyone feels safe to relax and have a fun time above all else. None of us want the threat of COVID lingering in the back of our minds while trying to be creative and have a good time. Based on feedback from our clients, we have come up with the following protocol going forward for our photography workshops:
We will require one of the following to attend our workshops:
- Proof of vaccine with the last dose at least 14 days before the workshop.
- …or a negative PCR COVID test taken within 72 hours of the start time of the workshop.
- …or a rapid test taken within six hours of the start time of the workshop.
We understand this is an ever-evolving situation, and we will follow the current CDC and local health department regulations and inform you before the workshop. David and Jennifer are vaccinated for your safety as well. Thank you for your understanding during these unprecedented times, we want our workshops to be a fun and safe experience for everyone!

The San Juan mountains in Colorado are a wonderland of dramatic mountains with endless hillsides of aspen trees and scrub oak that turn brilliant colors this time of year. If you have been looking for an opportunity to work on your creative vision with some of the most thoughtful instructors around, this is your chance!
David is a Colorado native and has spent countless years exploring the San Juan Mountains. His love and knowledge of this incredible landscape shows in his images.
He runs the Nature Photographers Network and is a strong believer in expressing your own unique vision of the world through your images.
David practices and teaches contemplative photography to help photographers connect with the landscape in their own unique way by seeing differently.
Jennifer is a passionate photographer who expresses her unique vision through her images.
She teaches a unique approach called 'slow photography' in which she encourages photographers to slow down and notice the beauty that surrounds them.
Jennifer expresses her emotions through her unique images of smaller scenes and abstracts. She is a talented teacher and speaker who has the unique ability to help clients break through creative barriers.
Scottish born Alister Benn is an award winning Landscape Photographer and founder of Expressive Photography Limited.
His passion for individual creativity and expression make him an enthusiastic instructor and someone who wants everyone to have the confidence to express their own unique voice.
Alister is a strong advocate of engaging with the landscape in an organic way, unrestrained by conventions, rules or the pressure of external validation.
Colorado Fall Colors Workshop 2016
David and Jennifer were excellent teachers, they focused their attention on the students not on shooting their own photos which most other workshop leaders do based on my experience. They were very organized and did their research in advance so we were at all the best locations for sunrise/sunset. I also liked the small class size which was more intimate, made it easier for logistics and prevented conflict between participants which is common with larger groups. I highly recommend David and Jennifer and plan to take more workshops with them in the future.
Colorado Fall Colors Workshop 2017
David & Jennifer, your 2017 Ridgway Colorado workshop was exceptional. You exceeded all of my expectations and I could not have had a better time! Your knowledge of the area and willingness to chase the best scenes for your clients was commendable. In a challenging Autumn color year you still provided us with exceptional sites to shoot. Your teaching styles and personalities are complimentary and both of you were patient, exceptionally knowledgeable and also accommodating to the various personalities of the group. It was very nice to see how you made beginner and advanced photographers comfortable. I can’t thank enough and I’m looking forward to attending future workshops.
Colorado Fall Colors Workshop 2017
In previous years, I attended several Fall Color workshops led by other leaders. This workshop was the best of all of them. David and Jennifer thoroughly researches, finds, and scouts good photographic venues. They visit them again the week before the scheduled workshop to determine which venues the color will be at its peak during the workshop. Then they adjust the schedule as necessary. During the workshops, we had the opportunity to photograph a wide variety of scenes. David and Jennifer were always very helpful to all of the workshop participants. They made sure we got the opportunity to take great photos and, when necessary, that we got the support we needed to do so correctly. I know everyone learned a lot.
Colorado Fall Colors Workshop 2017
Thank you so much for the wonderful experience I had in Colorado last week!! I’ve done quite a few photography workshops over many years and working with David and Jennifer in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado was truly a pleasure. The chosen locations included both the iconic photos as well as back road locations for a more intimate experience. We had some long days with sunrise and sunset shoots but we all had a great time. Your attention to detail, generosity and well planned itinerary all contributed to a photo workshop experience that was not only great fun but resulted in some potentially great photos. I wish I could give you some constructive criticism but I can’t because I enjoyed it all. Take care and thank you both for all that you did to insure we got great photos and had a memorable experience. Loved the chocolate chip cookies!

Concerned About Your Safety
We understand how important your safety is when we’re in remote locations. This is why David and Jennifer are both certified Wilderness First Responders, we are prepared for any situation large or small. We also carry satellite communication devices should we need rescue assistance in remote areas.
We always run our workshops on the up and up. For this workshop Exploring Exposure operates under a Special Use Permit on the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, Gunnison, and San Juan National Forests. We are also an equal opportunity service provider.
We encourage you to find your unique style of creativity with focused training based on your style and skill level. You will experience a rigorous learning experience in the field and the classroom to take your photography to the next level.
Our passion is seeing you grow in your photographic journey. We put your interests ahead of our own. Early on in the workshop, we will not photograph at all. Our focus is your learning experience, and we will not run off to chase the light and leave you behind. As the workshop progresses, we will take a few photos in a limited manner. This is so you can see how we approach a scene, demonstrate techniques, and create comradery with the group. Our focus will always remain with YOU.
We understand everyone comes to workshops at different points in their photography journeys. We will be there to guide and help you, whether you are a beginner or advanced shooter. There is always something to learn about photography, and we will do our best to help you find your creative vision.
Above all, we want this to be a fun experience for you. With our small group size, we get to know our clients very well, and we feel like they are part of our extended family. We do this for the love of photography, and there is nothing that gives us greater joy than seeing our clients grow and find their artistic vision.
This workshop is very easy. Most of our locations we will be shooting near the road. There might be some brief, short hiking for some locations (all under a quarter mile in length with a gentle grade.) We will be at high elevations though, so a short hike can quickly leave you out of breath. There is one location we might go to that is about one mile with a somewhat steep grade up a dirt road, if you’re not physically able you can opt-out of this hike. We should be able to drive most of this unless it has rained recently.
- Ridgway is not near a major international airport, but still easy to access. See the options below, and we then recommend using Google Flights to find the best option for where you are coming from.
- Option 1 – Fly to Denver International Airport and rent a car to make the 6 hour drive
- Option 2 – Fly to Montrose Airport and rent a car to make the 30 minute drive. Airlines that frequent this airport vary but service through Denver is available year-round through United
- Option 3 – Fly to Grand Junction Airport and rent a car to make the 1 hour 45 minute drive
Are spouses/partners welcome?
For this workshop, no. We already have a large group and need to keep it at this size. Any partners joining will have to pay for a full seat.
Will I have cell signal during the Workshop?
Cell signal is extremely intermittent in most of the locations we will visit, you should not expect to be connected all the time, at certain locations you may be offline for long periods, enjoy the silence. There is cell service and wifi available in Ridgway.
Will the instructors take photos during the Workshop?
The instructors will take a few photos in a limited manner, this is so you can see how we approach a scene, create comradery with the group, and to show you the same type of images you will be taking for our post-processing session. Our focus will always remain with you.
Will weather cancel the Workshop?
Dramatic weather is when the best photographs are created! Unless there are very dangerous conditions the weather will not stop us, in fact it will encourage us! No rain checks will be given for any weather related circumstances.

In the event we cancel a workshop, participants will be given the option to reschedule to a later date or receive a full refund. we are not, however, liable for expenses incurred such as airfare or accommodations, and for this reason we also recommend the purchase of trip insurance.
