DESCRIPTION

This is your chance to get off the beaten path and photograph the most remote areas of Death Valley that are seldom visited. This will be an exciting adventure where you will ride in my 4x4 van to locations where we will be camping for 4 nights, there are no hotels where we are going! You will see sand dunes, massive mud cracks that will blow your mind, beautiful salt flats that rival Badwater basin, but these always have water on them! All of the photos in this post are locations we will visit. This is a unique offering that I am limiting to only 3 people, you will want to jump on this quickly!

ITINERARY

December 7 - We will meet outside of the General Store in Furnace Creek, CA at 11:00am for introductions and to load up our gear. We will then make the long drive to our secret location deep in the backcountry of Death Valley in time to set up camp and hike out to photograph sunset.

December 8-10 - In the morning we will wake early to catch sunrise and the continue photographing in the soft morning light. During the day we will either hang around camp where I can show you post processing techniques, or explore a new area. Each day we will photograph sunset and return to camp for dinner.

December 11 - We will rise early for sunrise, pack up camp and be back to Furnace Creek in the early afternoon, at which time you are free to go.

WHAT IS INCLUDED

  • Tent, Sleeping Bag, Sleeping Pad
  • Transportation from Furnace Creek to remote locations in Death Valley
  • Food and water
  • Small group size of 3 maximum

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED

  • Park entrance fees, please stop at the visitor center to pay for a pass when you come in

WEATHER

In December the temperatures are generally comfortable during the day, but can be chilly, as you can expect in the desert, the temperatures drop considerably at night. Temperatures of 30 or lower should be expected. Weather may cancel the workshop if massive flooding occurs that closes all the backcountry roads. This is the only weather that would cancel the workshop, in which case I will offer a full refund.

FITNESS LEVEL

This workshop will involve short hikes of 2-3 miles, many of them will be in sand dunes and strenuous. Do not sign up if you are not in good health.

WHAT TO BRING

Please pack as light as possible as room will be limited in the van. I would recommend an ultra wide angle lens, and a standard lens, you may also bring a telephoto, but if room is limited this is the one to leave behind.

Do not bring a laptop unless it is very small and can be packed away easily.

Minimize the amount of clothes you bring, this is backcountry camping, you will be dirty and stinky after 4 nights without a shower, and so will everyone else, embrace it.

You will want synthetic hiking pants, possibly shorts. Temperatures may be cold in the mornings so bring a warm coat and layers for hiking in the morning.

TRANSPORTATION

You are responsible for getting to Furnace Creek, after that we will be traveling as a group in my 4x4 van. You are welcome to follow along in your own vehicle if preferred, but you must have 4wd and 10 ply tires.

HOW TO GET THERE

Please visit this site for directions to Furnace Creek. GPS can be unreliable so be sure to print out a map/directions.

NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

This workshop is not focused on night photography, but for those interested we will go out at least one night to photograph the stars and milky way. If we have clear skies we can spend more time out at night, these will not be long nights. The workshop has been planned around the moon setting before the milky way comes out in the morning.

LOCATIONS

We will not be visiting the typical locations in Death Valley, we will be going to a virtually unknown area, and the location is being kept as a secret to protect the fragile mud cracks.

FOOD

All food is provided for you, you may want to bring your own snacks depending on your preferences.

OTHER

Access to the internet is extremely limited, do not plan on staying connected during this trip. Verizon data does not work at all in these areas and AT&T is limited. Enjoy your time away, disconnect.
