There is no Photoshop trickery involved with the brilliant turquoise color of Blue Lakes. The incredible glacial fed waters are an experience you must see for yourself. This trip is planned around the peak of wildflowers in this area, the hills are covered with a vast array of mountain life. To top it off you are surrounded by towering, rugged mountain peaks, truly a photographer's paradise. We will spend our days exploring and photographing the wildflower covered slopes set against the alpine landscape. We will show you how to compose these massive scenes along with more intimate scenes in different lighting conditions.
Backpacking involves carrying all the necessary gear to survive in the wilderness for several days, this means all of your food, shelter, clothing, etc. This is an exciting adventure to get into true wilderness and disconnect with the hustle and bustle.
Note: You must arrive on the 13th and stay in Ouray or Silverton for the night to adapt to the high elevation, Ridgway is not high enough to properly adapt! Altitude sickness can be a real problem at 12,000ft, it will not only ruin your trip, but everyone else's, as the only option is to return to lower elevations. If you come from sea level and are not familiar with mountain elevations you must arrive on the 12th to adapt for 2 nights.
July 13 - We will meet in front of the Outlaw Restaurant at 6:00pm for introductions and dinner in Ouray.
July 14 - We will meet at Kate's Place for breakfast at 7am, we will then go to the trailhead to begin our adventure (you can leave your car at the Ridgway City Park or drive yourself). We will arrive at camp before any afternoon thunderstorms start, set up camp, photograph sunset, and return to camp for dinner.
July 15 - Rise early for sunrise and explore the area, rest in the afternoon and go back out for sunset, return for dinner.
July 16 - Rise early for sunrise, break down camp and hit the trail to beat the thunderstorms, and then return to Ridgway.

Summer conditions in the Colorado mountains can vary widely from fairly warm in the upper 70's to cold mornings in the 30's. Our biggest threat is afternoon thunderstorms which are typical this time of year. Weather will not cancel the trip, there will likely be days where we will wait out thunderstorms in our tents during the afternoon.
Lodging on the first night in Ouray is not included.
You are responsible for getting to Ridgway/Ouray, CO, after that we will be traveling as a group in our 4x4 vehicles. You are welcome to follow along in your own vehicle if preferred.
